Oh, John is very aware that Mary can take care of herself. Even so, taking care of her is something he's wanted since the moment he met her. Her feelings for him are very evident, for which he's grateful. With a girl like her, a guy could get a complex pretty quickly, especially if the guy in question is twenty years older than the girl remembers him. Of course, he rarely feels his age with Mary. One smile from her and he's that try-hard, earnest twenty-something all over again.
It's a good phase if they'd like to just park there.
John chuckles at that. "I'll propose it when I'm asking about the camping stuff for our trip," he tells her with a grin. John wouldn't dream of excluding Sam even if it's likely they'll get into a fight sometime during the trip. He and Sam don't always get along, but he loves him regardless.
He nods, watching her a moment then nods again. "So do I," he says with all that genuine earnestness of his younger years. He fishes the bacon out and lets it drain for a moment as he flips another pancake. The bacon gets placed on the edge of her plate and he starts one for himself. "More coffee?"
